Flo
Amstelstraat 9 (890 47 57). map
A touch of Paris in Amsterdam! Flo is the archetypical French brasserie: Fruits de Mer buffet right at the door, an elegant interior and impeccable service. Besides of course the plateau de Fruits de Mer the menu sports traditional French cuisine, changing every three months according to season. The brasserie was wildly praised by local critic Johannes van Dam and has since lived up to the expectations. Definitely worth a visit!
Open lunch Mon-Fri noon-3pm, dinner daily 6pm-11pm, souper 11pm-11:30pm (weekends 11pm-midnight).

Garlic Queen
Reguliersdwarsstraat 27 (422 64 26). map
As the name suggests garlic galore, with portraits of Queen Beatrix adorning the walls. In this restaurant in the middle of Amsterdam's most notorious gay area, every single dish from entree to dessert (garlic ice..) is prepared with garlic. The piece de resistance is a beef stew prepared with no less than 60 cloves! However, this is no freak cuisine; all flavours are wonderfully balanced, and often the garlic - be it deep fried, smoked or otherwise - is presented as a side dish to be added to taste. All starters and a lot of the main dishes can be ordered without garlic as well.
Open 5pm-11pm, closed Mon.

Herengracht
Herengracht 435 (616 24 82). map
Fashionable split-level restaurant cum bar near Leidseplein. Loungy interior with unadorned brick walls and sofa's and chairs in orange and browns. French cuisine, with traditional dishes like steak tartare with fries, tournedos béarnaise and country chicken, all prepared with taste. Popular so crowded, and due to the low ceilings it can get a little stuffy inside. Make reservations.
Open daily 10am-11pm.

Le Hollandais
Amsteldijk 41 (679 12 48). map
Split-level restaurant with basic no frills interior that wills all attention to the food, and it must be said rightly so. Contrary to what the name suggests le Hollandais serves delicious regional French cuisine, with one of the specialties being the homemade sausages. Lovely selection of wines. A 'Chef's table' is available for those who want to watch the kitchen magic up close.
Open Tue-Sat 6pm-11pm.

Lof
Haarlemmerstraat 62 (620 29 97). map
Signs of its butcher provenance are the large display case filled with fresh Mediterranean vegetables, and the walls of exposed brickwork and tiles. Plain wooden tables and sturdy linen make for an elegant but unpretentious interior. The neon 'tocque' (chef's hat) next to the open kitchen seems to will all attention to chef Sander's work, which indeed is of high quality; an international/fusion cuisine with a very palatable mix of Mediterranean and Asian ingredients. Lof's setting is informal, the audience definitely hip; for a bit of intimacy make your reservations for the back room a few steps up.
Open 6pm-11pm, closed Mon.

Just behind Central Station on the banks of the river IJ, the trendy Pier 10 is housed in a small building on the nr 10 jetty (in Dutch: 'Pier Tien'). The restaurant has two separate rooms, one of which has a splendid view of the river. International menu in a casual and romantic atmosphere.
