Bierbrouwerij 't IJ
Funenkade 7 (622 83 25). map
ygevel.jpgTasting house on the premises of beer brewery 't IJ, which is housed in an old windmill. The small and independent IJ brews about ten beers, all of which are on tap in this somewhat noisy and smoky 'Proeflokaal' . A favourite among locals, 't IJ is always crowded, especially on sunny days when it's a pleasure to sit outside. You can tour the brewery each Friday at 4pm.
Open daily 3pm-8pm.

East Of Eden
Linnaeusstraat 11 (665 07 43). map
EastOfEdenGevel.jpgTrue to its name, East of Eden has a distinct tropical flavor to it: yellowish walls, cane furniture, painted elephants behind the bar, and lots of light through the high windows. It has a large terrace with a good view of the nearby Tropical Museum. East of Eden attracts a mixed crowd of locals and, during the day, visitors of the museum.
Open 11am-1am (3am weekends).

This bar was named after the Seattle band, but indeed has a very nice garden as well. Alternative sounds with a crowd to match, and lots of games: pool, darts, pinball, chess, backgammon to name a few. Attractive terrace in the back, overlooking Singelgracht canal.
